It wouldn't be a family Memorial Day cookout without my nephew finding some creature to entertain us with. I don't know how he does it, he pulls things out of the pond so easily. The frogs seem to be the easiest for him to capture, but he also gets fish, snakes and turtles. After showing off his catch of the day, he always releases them back where they came from to be caught another day :-)!.

"Reflections"

I thought about this shot the entire ride home from work. I washed the glass plate and beads to get the dust off (my husband liked that part). I turned off all the lights and lit the candles. The bonus that I hadn't counted on was that the table is glass, as soon as I saw the reflection I knew that I had to include it in the shot. Of course this meant that I had to dust the glass (my husband was really smiling now). I applied a cross screen filter effect directly in the camera before transferring on to the computer. Very little post processing, I converted this to black & white and then reduced the opacity to about 70% to let just the faintest hint of the ivory candle color remain. I am really pleased with the end result, I hope you like it as well.

Yesterday was our towns Senior Prom day! This is Emily, she grew up across the street from me and is like a second daughter to me. This was an impromptu candid that I caught while she was trying to coax her cousins 3 year old son to take a picture with her. I loved the pose and she has such a beautiful smile. Additionally, it was Emily's 18th birthday, so a double celebration was in store for her. Her Mom, being the wonderful person that she is, drove to the function hall with a full sheet cake for a celebration at the Prom.

Happy Birthday Emily!

“If life gives you limes, make margaritas.” ~ Jimmy Buffett

Ok, my friends and I were a day late in celebrating Cinco De Mayo! Not really, but we did have a conversation regarding what that day represents. Have to love Google and Wikepedia:

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico.[1][2] The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.[3][4] The outnumbered Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army that had not been defeated in almost 50 years.

Whatever, doesn't this margarita look delicious! We don't need to wait for May 5th to enjoy these tasty beverages.... :-)

Have a great day everyone!

"Lizzie"

A portrait of my nephew's bearded dragon. He didn't seem all that thrilled to be out of his cage and on display. Not a typical Easter picture, lol!

Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge

I had an awesome day yesterday attending Scott Kelby's Photoshop seminar at the Boston Convention Center. I learned so many new things and can't wait to sit down and start applying some of the new techniques. I spent most of last night, upgrading to CS4 downloading the most current raw converter from adobe. Tonight I start to play! :)

On my way home, I shot this as I was coming out of the tunnel, I literally placed my G10 on top of my steering and wheel and just kept shooting frames as I drove over the Zakim Bridge. When I got home and viewed the shots, I was pleasantly surprised to find this particular one.

A little history on this bridge:

"The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, part of The Big Dig Project in Boston, is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world. The Bridge serves as the northern entrance to and exit from Boston. The Bridge is named after civil rights activist Lenny Zakim and the American colonists who fought the British in the Battle of Bunker Hill."

Have a great day everyone!

Robin Egg Blue

There is a robin that builds a nest each year at my sister in laws house. She told me that for the past few years the nest has been in the eaves under the deck. This year, however, the nest is in the wide open atop the pool hose. Needless to say the pool isn't getting cleaned because they can't disturb the nest. I hope that I can see this nest again after the eggs hatch. While processing this photo, I did begin to wonder why are robin eggs blue. The best answer I have been able to find on the web is:

"The pigments (porphyrins) that give bird eggs color and patterns are produced by the breakdown of hemoglobin from ruptured red blood cells, and transformed into bile pigments and carried to the uterus to be deposited in the developing shell during the last 5 hours before the egg is laid. The pigmentation was developed to hide the white eggs from predators. To a color-blind mammalian predator, blue or green or brown eggs blend in with the nest better than white eggs when the nest is unattended."

Still doesn't explain the color blue, but I will go with it. I do admire the craftsmanship of these birds, the nest is so perfect in its construction. Pretty amazing what these little guys can do.

I attempted to take portraits of my nephews for my sister in law. The sun was high in the sky with not a cloud in site. Actually a beautiful day to be outdoors, but a nightmare to photograph in. I am not sure how I should have handled this, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
